Dressing Outside The Box: welcome to the 60s

Last weekend we have celebrated the 50th birthday of my mom. Well, becoming 50 years old is a big thing so we have decided to arrange a big party for her. My mom came to the idea that since she is born 1964 it would be great to make a 60s motto party.

As you probably know there were a lot of different styles that time. In the early sixties women were still wearing the typical 50s style dresses.. tight at the top, a skinny waist and a flared skirt including a petticoat. Around 1968 the first movements of the hippies and flower childs began. In fact the most of our guests had been disguised as hippies with colourful clothes, flared pants, long hair with flower crowns and round, colourful classes.

But when I think about the 60s there is only one significant style which inspires me the most - the style of the mod subculture. This era had been affected by rock and roll and punk music, great artists such as The Who, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Clash and Sex Pistols. And also the fashion had changed a lot that time. Men were wearing sharp tailored suits and the women got rid of the feminine silhouette of the 50s and wore mini skirts, shift or A-lined dresses, sleeveless tops, oversized sweaters, peter pan collars and significant button plackets and loafers or ankle boots. The woman who represented this era the most for me had always been Twiggy. She is an icon and the perfect symbiosis of androgyny and a girly cuteness.

Letztes Wochenende hatten wir den 50. Geburtstag meiner Mutter gefeiert. Nunja, 50 zu werden ist ja schon eine große Sache und deshalb hatten wir uns auch dazu entschieden zu diesem Anlass eine große Party zu geben. Da meine Mutter ja 1964 geboren wurde hatte sie die grandiose Idee auf ihrem Geburtstag eine 60er Jahre Mottoparty zu machen.

Wie ihr bestimmt wisst gab es zu dieser viele verschiedene Stilrichtungen. In den frühen Sechzigern trugen viele Frauen noch die typischen 50er Jahre Kleider... Oben eng geschnitten mit einer schmalen Taillen und einem weit ausgestellten Rockteil inklusive Petticoat. Um etwa 1968 begannen zudem die ersten Hippie-Bewegungen. In der Tat waren die meisten unserer Gäste als Hippies verkleidet mit bunten Klamotten, Schlaghosen, Langhaarperücken mit Blumenkränzen geschmückt und runde, gefärbte Sonnenbrillen.

Jedoch wenn ich an die 60er Jahre denke gibt es für mich nur eine einzige signifikante Stilrichtung, die mich am meisten inspiriert - den Stil der Mod Subkultur. Diese Ära wurde geprägt durch Rock and Roll und Punk Musik, großartigen Künstlern wue The Who, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Clash und Sex Pistols. Ebenso die Mode änderte sich in dieser Zeit drastisch. Männer trugen nun elegante, maßgeschneiderte Anzüge und die Frauen lösten sich von der femininen Silhouette der 50er. Sie trugen nun Miniröcke, Shift- und A-Linienförmige Kleider, ärmellose Tops und übergroße Pullover, Bubikrägen und auffallende Knopfleisten und Knopfdetails und Loafers oder Ankleboots. Die Fraue, die meiner Meinung nach die Ära am meisten symbolisierte, war Twiggy. Sie ist eine Ikone und die perfekte Symbiose von Androgynität und mädchenhafter Niedlichkeit.
